I want to perform a clean boot of Windows Me - in other words, start the operating system without any unnecessary software running - so that I can troubleshoot and run tools like ScanDisk and Disk Defragmenter. Can you tell me how to do it?
Click Start, Run, type Msconfig in the box and click ok. In the System Configuration Utility window, select 'Selective startup'. Clear the checkboxes from all the options below 'Selective startup'. Select the Startup folder tab and click to select '*StateMgr'. Click ok to close the System Configuration Utility and answer Yes when you are asked to restart your computer. A clean boot will then take place.
To return from a clean-boot state, start the System Configuration Utility again and this time select 'Normal startup'. Click ok to close the utility and answer Yes when asked to restart the computer. Normal functionality will then be restored.
